Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming part of school development, raising important questions about agency, responsibility, and the evolving roles of educators, school leaders, policymakers, learners, and AI systems themselves. While AI has the potential to support teaching, learning, and decision-making, it also risks fostering cognitive offloading, reducing professional autonomy, and obscuring accountability if adopted without careful consideration of human values and educational goals.
In this lecture, Olga Viberg (KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden) examines how human-centred AI can strengthen, rather than diminish, human agency in K-12 education. Drawing on perspectives from the learning sciences, human-computer interaction, and responsible AI, the talk introduces a framework for understanding agency in AI-mediated educational contexts through four interrelated dimensions: human oversight, human-AI complementarity, AI competencies, and relational emergence. These dimensions provide a lens for considering how responsibility is distributed across stakeholders involved in school development and how AI systems can be designed and implemented to support meaningful human judgement rather than replace it.
The keynote discusses key challenges, including trust, transparency, privacy, autonomy, and cognitive offloading, and considers their implications for self-regulated learning, professional decision-making, and organisational change in schools. Drawing on emerging research and practical design examples, it highlights principles for fostering responsible human-AI partnerships that promote educational values, equity, and trust.
