Established in 2021 as part of the Research Alliance Ruhr, the College for Social Sciences and Humanities is a joint research institution of the University of Duisburg-Essen, Ruhr University Bochum, and TU Dortmund University. It promotes high-profile research in the social sciences and humanities.
Designed as an Institute for Advanced Study, the College is fundamentally open in regard to disciplines and topics. It provides opportunities to develop and implement innovative research, and pursues the mission of facilitating interdisciplinary dialogue and international collaboration.
The cornerstones of the College are constituted by three high-profile research professorships, interdisciplinary research groups, and a Senior Fellowship Programme, inviting up to 20 distinguished international scholars per year.
The College is located in the centre of Essen, a metropolitan city in the heart of Western Germany. Its close proximity to Essen main station ensures excellent connections to public transportation. The well-appointed facilities of the College offer favourable working conditions for individual and collaborative research projects.
The Ruhr area is characterised by extraordinary diversity – demographic, cultural, and academic. As a post-industrial region, it has evolved into a culturally versatile metropolitan centre uniquely combining modern urbanity with green and rural spaces. The region constitutes one of the densest science hubs in Europe, with the added benefit of short distances to various other European cities.
In the University Alliance Ruhr, three major universities based in the metropolitan Ruhr area have joined forces: the University of Duisburg-Essen, Ruhr University Bochum, and TU Dortmund University. This unique cross-university initiative has been promoting the advancement of cutting-edge research within the national and international academic landscape since 2007. Under the umbrella of the UA Ruhr, the Research Alliance Ruhr was founded in 2021 to concentrate excellence in different fields: along with the College for Social Sciences and Humanities, the four Research Centres “One Health Ruhr – From Molecules to Systems”, “Chemical Sciences and Sustainability”, “Trustworthy Data Science and Security”, and “Future Energy Materials and Systems” form its constituent parts. The state of North-Rhine Westphalia provides 123 million euros for the initial phase of the Research Alliance, facilitated by the Ruhr Conference.
