Sociological Study on In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) and Motherhood Among Women Aged 40 and Above

Prof. Tannistha Samanta (Senior Fellow, College for Social Sciences and Humanities, University Alliance Ruhr) is conducting a sociological study exploring the experiences of women in Germany who have undergone in-vitro fertilisation (IVF) or other forms of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) at age 40 or older.

This study aims to understand how women in this age group navigate cultural expectations and social norms around motherhood in Germany. It seeks to explore questions such as:

  • What were their experiences at clinics or hospitals where they sought IVF services?
  • Have they encountered any stigma or bias related to their age or decision to "delay" motherhood?
  • What role have social networks – family, friends, or others – played in their reproductive journey and beyond?

Participation Details:

  • Participants will receive an information sheet and consent form prior to the interview.
  • Interviews will be conducted in English and will last approximately 45 minutes.
  • All interviews will take place via Zoom.
  • Please note that this study does not offer monetary compensation.
  • Eligible participants should have undergone IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) at age 40 or older and may be single or partnered.

If you or someone you know fits this profile and is interested in sharing their experiences, Tannistha Samanta would be grateful to hear from you.
